Here’s some highlights of what we've done this year:
We surveyed 400 of the most marginalized communities in Tempe about how the city delegates funding, compiled the results in a report we got in front of the Mayor and City Council to influence the budget.
Through our budget activism in Tempe we won: 1 crisis response worker, 5 mental health counselors for middle school and an energy equity specialist in sustainability.
In Tempe we changed city council processes to increase our ability to be heard, one way is by changing public comment at city council to the beginning of city council meetings.
We also held a townhall and brought the City Attorney out, who committed to creating a process for community to add to the agenda and hear back from their council members.
We traveled to Seattle and Oakland to learn about restorative justice and pre-court diversion programs.
We received trainings on how to hold circles to both build community and resolve conflict.
Black Folx Rock is a space where Black people can learn about rock climbing and explore the outdoors with other Black folx.
We partnered with Free Arts for Abused Children to create a healing arts workshop for girls in foster care.
Freedom Schools creates curriculum to build community through a Black queer feminist lens.
We have a youth book club which is a safe space for young Black children to learn about their culture.
We built a support group for victims of police brutality and their families.
Through the We Keep Us Safe Initiative, our security coalition is ensuring the safety of our communities without police.
